Research Centres with a focus on environmental sustainability

Several Departments, Schools and Centres are working on Environmental Research. Further, there are dedicated Schools/Centres and Departments that are working on Environmental Sustainability research and these academic units are described here in brief.

  • School of Environmental Science and Engineering (SESE) was started in 2012 and has 1 full-time (FT) faculty member, 2 FT staff members and 15 faculty members are affiliated to the school. SESE has approximately 50 Research Scholars who are engaged in research in the broad domain of environmental sustainability. https://www.iitkgp.ac.in/department/EF
  • School of Energy Science and Engineering (ESAE) has 3 FT faculty members and 80 Research Scholars since its inception in 2013. An M.Tech. program was started in 2015 and the program was revamped in 2021 to M.Tech. in 'Renewable Energy Technologies' congruent with the focus on sustainable energy technologies.   • CORAL runs a course on M.Tech. in Earth System Science and Technology. This is about environmental sustainability. The centre has 11 FT faculty members and about 60 research scholars working on different aspects of sustainability. The student strength per batch for M.   • School of Water Resources has 5 FT faculty members, 2 staff members and 25 Research Scholars since its inception in 2008. An M.Tech. program was started with a focus on sustainable use of water resources. The student strength per batch is 15.
  • Civil Engg – Environmental Engg and Management Section has 5 full-time faculty members, 2 technical staff members and 50 Research Scholars. An M.Tech program in Environmental Engineering and Management was started in 1990 and the program was started with a focus on sustainable use of water resources. The scope of the program now includes air quality, climate change, solid and hazardous waste management. The student strength per batch is 20.
  • Mining Engineering department offers an M.Tech. degree in Safety, Health and Environment. The programme was started in 2016. They have 6 FT faculty members, 4 staff members and 42 Research Scholars. and the program was started with a focus on sustainable use of resources and risk management of human health and the environment. The student strength per batch is 7 M.Tech. and 30 DD students.
  • Architecture and Regional Planning offers an M.Arch. degree in Sustainable Built Environments (M.Arch.). They have 15 FT faculty members, 9 staff members, 90 Research Scholars and 139 M.Tech. students in the department.
  • Ranbir and Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Design and Mngt. offers an M.Tech. degree in Infrastructure Design and Management. They have 5 full-time faculty members and 2 staff members. The School has 67 M.Tech. students and 21 Ph.D. Scholars.
  • Agricultural and Food Engineering offers courses like M.Tech. in Land and Water Resources Engineering, Aquaculture Engineering, Agricultural Biotechnology, Farm Machinery and Power, Agricultural Systems and Management and Food Process Engineering with 39 full-time faculty members, 25 staff members, 260 M.Tech. and 170 Ph.D. Scholars.
