  • Institute norms would apply for all the factors being considered.

Selection Process
  • Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Architecture (FoE&A), will announce the beginning of the nomination process for GSSFEA every year on the website of the IIT Kharagpur ( www.iitkgp.ac.in ) in the first week of May of every year.
  • Any current student or alumnus of IIT Kharagpur may nominate a current active faculty member for the award. For this, a group of 5 students/alumni will have to jointly propose a nominee (using FORM 1). The whole process will be a well-coordinated effort whereby the lead proposer (student or alumnus) interacts with 4 others (student or alumnus) who have been helped by the nominee and feel that he/she deserves to be proposed or nominated for the award. The lead proposer also connects with a current faculty member or an Ex-faculty member (Seconder) of IIT Kharagpur, who is ready to vouch for the achievements of the nominee.
  • The lead proposer then sends directly the duly filled-in FORM 1 to the Dean, FoE&A (deanf@iitkgp.ac.in), copying the rest of the members (4 other proposers + 1 seconder) and keeping alumni@hijli.iitkgp.ac.in in the loop.
  • After verifying the details in the FORM 1, an email will be sent to the Lead proposer confirming nomination, along with the FORM 2. The lead proposer and 4 other proposers will then complete FORM 2, each of them citing 2 mutually exclusive reasons (one of the reasons must be on outside class room activities). The lead proposer then send directly the duly filled-in FORM 2 to the Dean, FoE&A (deanf@iitkgp.ac.in), copying it the rest of the members (4 other proposers + 1 seconder) and also keeping alumni@hijli.iitkgp.ac.in in the loop.
  • Subsequently the Seconder evaluates the reasons cited in FORM 2, and confirms at least 40% of the cited reasons, if not more, and sends his/her confirmation directly to the Dean, FoE&A (deanf@iitkgp.ac.in) copying alumni@hijli.iitkgp.ac.in
  • Dean FoE&A would thus have 10 mutually exclusive reasons or criteria [along with the Seconder?s confirmation of at least 4 of them], in favor of each of the nominee being proposed, out of which at least 5 reasons or criteria would be on outside class activities, to judge the suitability of the candidate for the award.
  • Dean FoE&A, after reviewing, will send all valid nominations to the Selection committee members. The committee will shortlist and rank a maximum of three (3) nominations, which will be sent to the Director for final selection of one (1) awardee
  • In case no nomination is received: The selection committee will work as Search Committee and identify 1 or 2 deserving faculty members and recommend to the Director citing all reasons, for final selection.
  • The Director will review all the recommended nominations and make the final decision. If needed, he/she may choose to review all nominations received.
  • The award shall be duly reported to the Board of Governors.
  • A suggested timeframe for the various steps during 2022 is as follows:
Step 1 Announcement by Dean FoE&A initiating the GSSFEA 2022 nomination process May 13, 2022
Step 2 Receipt of the preliminary nomination (FORM 1) by Dean FoE&A May 31, 2022 (Revised)
Step 3 Receipt of the Duly filled FORM 2 by Dean FoE&A [from the Lead Proposer] June 15, 2022
Step 4 Seconder to share his/her confirmation to the Dean, FoE&A June 22, 2022

Step 7 Selection of the awardee by the Director, and announcement to be made after BOG approval July 31, 2022
Step 8 Award to be presented on the Foundation Day of the Institute. Aug 18 2022

The objective of the award is to publicize celebration of teaching excellence among young faculty, in order to attract young top talent as faculty members. The selection process, as well as the broad criteria for selection, is given below.

Selection Process

  • Office of Dean, Faculty will receive nominations from those who are invited by it (as per criteria given below), in appropriate format and forwarded by the HoDs/HoSs/HoCs.
  • Nominations received will be shortlisted, based on eligibility criteria mentioned below, first by a Short-listing Committee appointed by the Director. The meetings of committee shall normally have a representative of the IIT Kharagpur Alumni Foundation (India) as member or one invitee nominated by IIT Kharagpur Alumni Foundation (India), except when such representatives are not available to attend a meeting. This committee may also invite subject experts from the institute and /or outside and interact with the shortlisted candidates to prepare a list of 3 candidates whose nomination papers would be sent to the Apex Committee for consideration for final recommendation. The Short-listing Committee shall make available to the Apex Committee the assessment of all nominations, including those not recommended, as well as all details of criteria applied in arriving at decision.
  • An Apex committee comprising external experts appointed by the Director and under the Chairmanship of the Director will review the nomination papers and make the final decision. If needed, the Apex Committee may choose to review all nominations received.
  • The award shall be reported to the Board of Governors

Selection Criteria

  • Only permanent faculty members, of age less than or equal to 45 as on 30th June of the award year, who have completed a minimum of 4 semesters of teaching and a maximum of 9 semesters of teaching at IIT Kharagpur as on the above mentioned date, and who have not received this award in the past, are eligible
  • Feedback shall be considered only for the theory courses which:
    • Have either been taught solely by the teacher,
    • Or have been taught jointly with other faculty members but a separate section of students was taught the full course solely by the nominee.

For courses with number of respondents greater than or equal to 90, the over-all score of the course shall be multiplied by a factor of 1.25, before being considered for averaging. A minimum score of 4.0 is needed to be eligible for the award. Only the top 10 eligible teachers shall be invited for submitting their nominations. The number may vary if:
    • either the number of eligible teachers is less than 10, in which case all such teachers shall be invited to submit their CVs
    • or if the number of eligible teachers is more than 10 with several teachers having the same average score, in which case the cut-off average feedback score shall be chosen to be the lowest cut-off such that a higher cut-off would render the number to be less than 10.
