"Large infrastructure projects require strong, interdisciplinary technical and management skills. It has therefore become imperative that Institutes bestowed with solid foundations in engineering, architecture, and management skills should initiate academic programmes to develop trained manpower in this upcoming area of infrastructure design and management. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has a vantage position with regard to its existing faculty and academic programmes in the areas of engineering, architecture and management. The institute, with its numerous academic departments, centers and schools with academic programmes in such wide ranging areas such as law, management, architecture and engineering, is in a uniquely advantageous position to contribute to the nation's goal of building world-class infrastructure." In the last academic year (2016 - 17), research scholars have authored 7 book chapters, published by Springer Germany and Singapore; New Age Books, New Delhi; Routledge; and Taylor and Francis, UK.  Between March 2016 - 17, 9 front-line peer-reviewed Journal papers have been produced, which are drawing worldwide attention and access on research-gate and other Online surfaces. The Ranbir and Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Design and Management has been started by IIT Kharagpur in the year 2008 as a result of the joint initiative of the institute and Mr. Ranbir (Ron) Singh Gupta, an alumnus (1970 batch B.Arch, IIT Kharagpur) of this Institute. The School is also focusing on strengthening their partnership with the industry by organizing an Invited Lecture Series, where industry partners will impart valuable field knowledge to the students. 
  • Dr. Arkopal Goswami has been awarded the prestigious Ucchatara Avijyan Project on Innovative Pedestrianization in Project Varanasi (2017 - 20);
    Dr. Swati Maitra has been awarded the Best Paper award and Gold Medal by India Road Congress;
    Dr. Bharath Aithal has been awarded 'The Young scientist's Award' by DST; and
    Dr. Ankhi Banerjee, Prof. Joy Sen (current Head and Joint faculty) and RS Tanima Bhattacharya have been awarded the Best Research paper award in ACE 2017, GSTF Singapore, to mention a few.
    RS Shivangi Singh Parmar has been awarded the fellowship attending the Housing PG Diploma Course (May 2017) in Rotterdam organized by Erasmus University; RS Dipanjan Nag has been awarded the prestigious Indo-Korean exchange fellowship to work in Korea for the Autumn semester 2017.
    RS. Sunny Bansal and RS Tanima Bhattacharya have just presented research papers in EURA 2017, Warsaw, Poland organized by the prestigious University of Warsaw.

The school has also initiated an innovative venture on Social Infrastructure interfacing MoUD, the govt. of West Bengal and IIT's Center for the Science of Happiness, and has been awarded a major R & D project, with Dr. Arkopal Goswami as PI.

  • The School Has Initiated And Now Developing 3 State-Of-The Art Labs On A) Social Infrastructure (Complementing The Sandhi Or Science And Heritage Initiative); B) Physical And Smart Infrastructure (Under The Future Of Cities Initiative); And C) On Advanced Gis Infrastructure Simulation, Where Till Date 20 Research Scholars Are Working And Enriching Their Research Processes.
